Crochet Muscle Car Hats

November 14, 2013 by Kelli

I’ve been waiting for a while to post about these hats. I gave you a sneak-peek back when I released the Willie Nelson hat and posted this picture:

In addition to the Willie Nelson and mohawk hats, I crocheted two other hats for this boy and his granddad: muscle car hats.

While talking with his mother, I learned that, among many other fun hobbies, the boys love sports cars. As she said about her young son, “He can now tell you all about the types of headlights, taillights, exhaust pipes…” And above all else, her son was obsessed with orange Mustangs.

I started with a basic hat, then began piecing the “car” together over the hat: building each piece separately, stitching it to the hat itself. (Excuse my bad photos…)

With a horse emblem on the grille, naturally:

Next up, I decided to make a ’70s-era, blue Camaro for the grandfather.

And what muscle car would be complete without a little, crocheted exposed engine?

While I like how these two car hats turned out, I’m looking forward to fine-tuning future hats: making them sleeker and more realistic. Perhaps this is my leap into a crochet auto body shop?

And as for the little boy, how did he like the hat? His mom emailed me this, “Man, he loves that Mustang hat like whoa. God forbid he doesn’t know where it is. And when my dad comes over, he take him the Chevy hat immediately. You really outdid yourself.”

Thanks again, Trish, for letting me use your picture!

Is there any way you can pass along your pattern for this, I crochet and would LOVE to make one for my friend’s birthday!!! He loves muscle cars and would love this.

Hi Caitlynn, unfortunately, I made it up as I went along. I’m planning to remake it and create a pattern to go with it. I can notify you when the pattern is ready, though it will likely be at least a month.

      Thank you for your interest!
